It’s crucial that you find a weight-loss solution

The Lap-Band Program helps you to lose weight gradually and safely. To ensure that you can lose weight safely with the Lap-Band, you need to meet the following qualifications:

  • Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) that is at least 40 kg/m² or you have a BMI of at least 30 kg/m² with one or more obesity-related comorbid conditions

  • Are at least 18-years old

  • Have a history of unsuccessful weight-loss attempts

  • Are not currently suffering from any other disease that may have caused your excess weight
  • Are prepared to make major changes in your eating habits and lifestyle
  • Do not drink alcohol in excess
  • Are not currently pregnant (patients who become pregnant after their gastric band placement may require adjustments or removal)

What Would Disqualify Me?

While most people looking for a bariatric surgery weight-loss solution qualify for the Lap-Band Program, there are some conditions that make bariatric surgical weight loss a less than optimal solution. If you have, or think you may have, any of the disqualifying conditions listed below, you may want to speak to a surgeon before deciding on a bariatric surgical weight-loss option.

  • An inflammatory disease or condition of the gastrointestinal tract, such as ulcers, severe esophagitis, or Crohn’s disease
  • Severe heart or lung disease, or any other disease that makes you a poor candidate for any surgery

  • Problems that could cause bleeding in the esophagus or stomach. This might include esophageal or gastric varices (dilated veins), congenital or acquired intestinal telangiectasia (dilation of a small blood vessel)

  • Portal hypertension
  • Congenital or aquired abnormalities of the esophagus, stomach, or intestine. For instance, if you have a narrowed opening
  • An intraoperative gastric injury, such as a gastric perforation at or near the location of the intended band placement
  • Cirrhosis
  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Alcohol or drug addiction
  • Current or possible pregnancy

  • Under the age of 18

  • Unable or unwilling to comply with dietary restrictions that are required by this procedure
  • The presence of an infection anywhere in your body, especially one that could contaminate the surgical area
  • Chronic, long-term steroid treatment
  • An allergy to materials in the device
  • Pain intolerance from an implanted device
  • Personal or family history of an autoimmune connective tissue disease, such as systemic lupus erythematosus or scleroderma. The same is true if you have symptoms of one of these diseases

Important Lap-Band® System Safety Information

The Lap-Band System is indicated for weight reduction for patients with obesity, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 40 kg/m2 or a BMI of at least 30 kg/m2 with one or more obesity-related comorbid conditions. It is indicated for use only in adult patients who have failed more conservative weight reduction alternatives, such as supervised diet, exercise and behavior modification programs. Patients who elect to have this surgery must make the commitment to accept significant changes in their eating habits for the rest of their lives.

The Lap-Band System is not recommended for non-adult patients (patients under 18 years of age), patients with conditions that may make them poor surgical candidates or increase the risk of poor results, who are unwilling or unable to comply with the required dietary restrictions, or who currently are or may be pregnant.

The Lap-Band System is a long-term implant. Explant and replacement surgery may be required. Patients who become pregnant or severely ill, or who require more extensive nutrition may require deflation of their bands. Anti-inflammatory agents, such as aspirin, should be used with caution and may contribute to an increased risk of band erosion.

Placement of the Lap-Band System is major surgery and, as with any surgery, death can occur. Possible complications include the risks associated with the medications and methods used during surgery, the risks associated with any surgical procedure, and the patient’s ability to tolerate a foreign object implanted in the body. Most common related adverse events include: Band slippage, pouch dilation, stoma obstruction, gastroesophageal reflux, esophageal dilation, cholelithiasis, incisional infection, abdominal pain, gastroenteritis, or nausea and vomiting may occur. Reoperation may be required. Rapid weight loss may result in complications that may require additional surgery. Deflation of the band may alleviate excessively rapid weight loss or esophageal dilation.
